Why Start Dance at Age Two?

Toddlers at this age are learning new skills every day, from jumping and running to talking and socialising. Introducing dance at age two helps strengthen these skills in a fun, engaging environment.

Classes in dancing (for 2 year olds) focuses on simple, repetitive movements, listening to music and enjoying playful activities that support coordination, balance and self-expression.

We divide the class time into sections with different props and dynamics to keep preschoolers engaged for a whole lesson. 2 year olds develop important coordination milestones, allow freestyle and creative choices and build confidence. They will use rhythm sticks to roll some sushi, go camping with the parachute, chase rainbows with ribbons and so much more.

At this stage, dance is about starting to learn structured steps and celebrating movement. If your little one isn’t ready for structured steps just yet, why not get them started with our Ready Set Move program?

What to Expect in a 2 Year Old’s Dance Class

Dance classes for 2 year olds typically include:
    • Simple movement exploration

Your toddler will practice walking, marching, tiptoeing and twirling in ways that feel natural and fun. These activities help strengthen gross motor skills while giving them a safe space to explore their body’s abilities. These classes are perfect for 2 year olds who are ready to experience an independent learning environment. If they’re not quite ready, try starting with our Ready Set Move program.
    • Imaginative adventures

Two-year-olds have vivid imaginations, letting dance become a gateway to magical adventures! Our teachers, certified through our training academy, will guide them through themed activities, such as pretending to hop like bunnies, float like bubbles or march like little superheroes. These stories keep toddlers engaged and make movement fun and memorable.
    • Supportive and positive atmosphere

At age two, it’s all about gentle encouragement, positive reinforcement and genuine joy. Certified teachers use praise, gentle guidance and lots of smiles to make sure every child feels proud of their participation, whether they join in for the whole class or just a few moments at a time.
    • Props and sensory fun

Ribbons and parachutes make dance time exciting for toddlers. Props provide visual stimulation, encourage tactile awareness and help children explore movement in creative, interactive ways.
    • Music and rhythm play

Toddlers tend to love music! Our dance classes use clapping, stomping, shaking instruments and moving to the beat to build listening skills and awareness of rhythm. These playful activities also encourage self-expression and joy.

Added Benefits of Starting Dance at 2 Years Old

Dance offers far more than movement practice; it plays a key role in early learning and social development. For 2 year olds, our dance classes support:
    • Confidence building

Taking part in a group activity helps our young dancers feel brave and independent, while positive reinforcement from teachers boosts self-esteem.
    • Expressing feelings through movement

Toddlers may not have the words yet, but the free dance movement components give them a way to express excitement, silliness, curiosity and joy.
    • Developing motor skills

From clapping and tapping to waving ribbons and tiptoeing, toddlers strengthen fine motor coordination and gross motor skills in every class.
    • Listening and following simple directions

Activities encourage toddlers to respond to both visual and auditory instructions in musical cues, copying actions and following gentle instructions, building their focus and comprehension.
    • Early social skills

Even at such a young age of 2, group classes help toddlers practice sharing, waiting their turn and interacting with others in a safe and supportive setting.
    • Build social confidence

Through dance, your toddler will step into a group setting where they’re encouraged to try new things and be seen. This gentle exposure builds independence and self-esteem, especially when supported by Ready Set Dance’s nurturing teachers and a playful atmosphere that values effort over perfection.

Dance Classes for 2 Year OIds: FAQs

Is my child too young to start dance classes at age 2?

Not at all! Age 2 is a wonderful time to introduce your child to dance. Our kids’ dance classes are designed to suit very young attention spans, using music, play and movement to build early confidence, coordination, body awareness and creativity in a supportive environment.

How does Ready Set Dance separate classes by age?

Our curriculum divides Ready Set Dance classes into age groups:
    • Level 1 for 2 to 3-year-olds
    • Level 2 for 4 to 5-year-olds
In combined classes, teachers adjust activities to suit each child’s stage of development.

What is the structure of a Ready Set Dance class?

Ready Set Dance offers a fun program combining jazz, hip hop, music, singing and tap, designed to build Confidence, Coordination and Creativity. Children improve muscle strength, balance and rhythm through engaging activities like skipping and tapping; they build confidence singing on a mic and dancing to original tracks. Each element and the variety of dance styles supports key developmental milestones while keeping kids active and engaged.

Ready Set Ballet classes are a great introduction to classical ballet. Our dance teachers combine themed music, props, mime and movement to build coordination skills, creativity, strength and fine motor skills, all while having fun with ribbons, feathers and bubbles in our ballet classes.

Ready Set Acro classes use original music with lyric cues to help preschoolers build flexibility, strength and confidence through fun AcroDance movements and social skills development.

That’s completely normal for 2 year olds! Our classes run for 45 to 60 minutes. Some toddlers join in right away, while others observe first. Our experienced teachers encourage participation gently and celebrate every small success.

What should my child wear to class?

We recommend the Ready Set Dance uniform for comfort and ease of movement. Our dancers often wear a leotard dress with tights or a Ready Set Dance T-shirt with shorts. Tap/Jazz shoes are recommended, and long hair should be tied back. Fun accessories are available in our retail shop to let your child show off their personality!

We find young kids love feeling a sense of belonging to our Ready, Set, Dance community and take pride in wearing their uniforms to each class.

    Can parents stay during class?

In Ready Set Dance, parents and caregivers are encouraged to allow their child’s independent participation. Dance classes for 2 year olds offer the opportunity to showcase new found independence.
