What is Tap Dancing?

Tap dancing is a rhythmic and expressive dance style named for the tapping sound made when the small metal plates on the dancer's shoes touch the hard floor. It emphasises precision, timing and syncopation, making it both a musical and physical challenge as dancers create intricate beats and patterns from the tapping sounds. Through dynamic footwork and lively sequences, tap dancers engage with the music, creating a unique performance that blends sound and movement.

What is covered in the tap dance lessons for kids?

Tap dancing classes for kids are an essential element in our combo classes. At Ready Set Dance, your child will explore tap alongside jazz, hip-hop and musical theatre. Each class starts with a fun warm up and follows through with technique, improvisation, music and how to put it all into action. It’s a fun, rhythm-filled dance genre that gives little tap dancers skills they can carry into other dance forms.

With tap classes, kids get to groove to the beat, sharpen their coordination, and improve their balance, spatial awareness and motor control. Ready Set Dance takes it a step further, inspiring young dancers to improve their musicality, sequence memory, literacy capability and self-efficacy. Are tap classes the only style taught at Ready Set Dance?

Not at all! Your child’s tap journey can certainly begin in our Ready Set Dance classes, but tap is just one of the fun dance styles your child will experience as part of our combo classes. Ready Set Dance blends tap, jazz, hip hop and musical theatre to give kids a well-rounded introduction to movement, rhythm and creativity. Every class is designed to keep children engaged, confident and excited to explore different ways to dance. 

What age group is Ready Set Dance for?

Our classes are designed especially as preschooler and toddler tap dance classes, for children aged 2 to 5 years. Each class helps children develop coordination, creativity and confidence through dance, music and movement. Our teachers make sure every child feels included, supported and ready to begin their dance journey! 

What is the best attire for my kids tap dance classes?

Prepare your child for tap class by dressing them in their Ready Set Dance uniform. We offer comfortable dancewear such as a leotard and leggings or T-shirt and shorts, along with tap shoes so they can make some noise on the floor! Long hair should be tied back, and don’t forget we have a range of fun hair accessories available to add a personal touch. 

Does my child need any dance experience to join?

Not at all! Ready Set Dance is the perfect place for beginners. Our program introduces children to a mix of dance styles, including tap, jazz, hip hop and musical theatre, in a playful, encouraging and supportive environment.
