    Walking Age Dance Classes

Once your little one is confidently on their feet, the world changes — and so does the way they move! Ready Set Dance walking-age classes are specially designed for toddlers who are newly walking (typically from first steps up to around 24 months). These sessions focus on joyful movement, sensory play and parent-child connection to build early motor skills, body awareness and a love of music.

Why Start Dance at Walking Age?

Walking-age toddlers are discovering balance, coordination and independence. Dance and movement is a gentle, joyful way to support those milestones. At this stage, classes centre on exploration rather than instruction: simple repetitive actions, sensory experiences and music help toddlers understand their bodies, build confidence and learn how to play with others.

If your little one isn’t ready for our structured Ready Set Dance lessons, you may consider our Ready Set Move program.

    Mum & Baby Dance Classes

Our Mum & Baby Dance classes offer a special opportunity for parents and their little ones to bond through music and movement. Designed for babies from birth to pre-walking age, these gentle, playful sessions focus on interactive songs, sensory play, and guided movements that support early motor skills, body awareness, and social connection.

Parents and caregivers participate alongside their babies, fostering attachment, confidence, and joyful exploration in a safe, nurturing environment. Babies can experience rhythm and music while engaging their senses, laying the foundation for our walking-age dance and preschool dance classes. It's a wonderful way to share early milestones, encourage movement and celebrate your baby’s first steps in the world of dance.

What to Expect in a Walking-Age Dance Class

    Walking-age classes typically include:
    • First-steps movement play

Short, simple actions like walking along a ribbon path, marching to a drum, wobble-walking over soft mats, and tiny turns help children practise balance and controlled movement in a safe, playful setting.

    • Music, rhythm and vocal play

Teachers use upbeat songs, call-and-response rhymes and simple percussion to help toddlers recognise rhythm and develop listening skills. Expect lots of clapping, bouncing, music and singing together.
    • Sensory & prop-based activities

Bubbles, shakers and textured props add sensory interest and encourage exploration. Our specifically designed props for our younger toddlers with the aim of sparking curiosity and developing fine motor skills.

    • Warm encouragement

Certified dance teachers use gentle praise and playful direction to celebrate effort and curiosity rather than precision. The aim is self-confidence, connection and fun.

Added Benefits of Dance for Walking-Age Toddlers

Introducing dance at a walking age supports development beyond movement:
    • Balance & gross motor development

Active play with directional movement and obstacle-style games improves coordination, leg strength and spatial awareness.
    • Bonding and emotional safety

Parent-attended classes create secure, joyful interactions that support emotional regulation and attachment.
    • Language and listening foundations

Songs, call-and-response and cue-based play strengthen receptive language and early listening skills.
    • Social introduction

Even with a parent nearby, toddlers learn to observe peers, take turns with props and build early social confidence.
    • Expressing feelings through movement

Toddlers may not have the words yet, but the free dance movement components give them a way to express excitement and joy.
    • Developing motor skills

From clapping and tapping to waving ribbons and tiptoeing, toddlers strengthen fine motor coordination and gross motor skills in every class. This supports healthy early childhood development while laying the foundation for physical and social skills.
    • Building early dance education

Walking-age classes introduce toddlers to different dance styles, helping them develop early dance skills and coordination that will support future jazz dance classes and other kids dance classes, such as hip-hop  or tap .

Dance Classes for Walking Age: FAQs

Is my child too young to start if they’re just walking?

Not at all. Walking age is a wonderful moment for young dancers to start dance classes. Ready Set Dance schools provide lessons designed for their short attention spans and include parent participation so toddlers feel safe while exploring movement.

What happens if my toddler doesn’t participate?

It’s completely normal. Some children observe before joining in. Our certified teachers encourage gentle involvement and celebrate every small step; there’s no pressure.
